Marine Research & Education
Seward is home to some of the top minds and resources when it comes to marine research and education with organizations and facilities like:
- Alaska SeaLife Center
- Alutiiq Pride Marine Institute
- Kenai Fjords National Park
- University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Seward Marine Center
- Bear Creek Weir & Trail Lakes Hatchery
- Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association
- Alaska Department of Fish and Game
Owned by the NSF and operated by UAF’s College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, the R/V Sikuliaq calls the Seward Marine Center home. As part of the UNOLS fleet, the 261-foot, global class, ice-capable SKQ has been supporting global oceanographic science operations since 2014.
The Alaska SeaLife Center combines its public-facing educational mission with marine research and wildlife response. The state's only permanent marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation facility, ASLC's top team of scientists work to understand the arctic and subarctic marine ecosystems.
Big things are happening at the Alutiiq Pride Marine Institute, where research and development is being conducted to enhance mariculture across the PNW. They also provide seed string starts for budding kelp farms across Alaska, and are working to make this new industry economically viable!
From glaciology to fish population restoration, Seward is home to some of the best scientific minds in studies like fisheries biology and natural resource management, and is full of opportunities for researchers to explore the natural wonders of Resurrection Bay and beyond.
